HALCYON DAYS by Shoji Kokami

In a translation by Aya Ogawa
Director: Shoji Kokami

HALCYON DAYS, by renowned Japanese playwright and director Shoji Kokami, receives its English language premiere at the Riverside Studios between 23 August and 18 September. Also directed by Shoji Kokami, the text is translated by Brooklyn based, Tokyo born writer, director and performer Aya Ogawa. HALCYON DAYS follows the story of three people and one ghost who meet on a suicide website.

Examining the cult popularity of suicide websites in contemporary Japanese culture, the play looks at a decade where conflicts with other nations are sensationally streamed on 24 hour rolling news channels and terrorist organisations boast about their achievements on YouTube. Even chronic depression is catered for by the increase of ‘informative’ suicide websites. Are people becoming more jaded with their real existence? Has life lost sanctity and meaning?

Feelgood Theatre Productions presents the London premiere of

‘Slave - A Question of Freedom’ at Riverside Studios
Slave - A Question of Freedom, Based on the book ‘Slave’ by Mende Nazer and Damien Lewis,
the play tells the compelling real life story of a young woman’s account of being sold into slavery and her subsequent fight for freedom.

Winner of the Pete Postlethwaite Manchester Eve News Best New Play, NW Arts Review, Best Play, Best Director and Best Actress, 2011.

“Although this is one person’s story, Mende’s story is universal, giving voice to the voiceless, dispelling the myth that slavery ended 200 years ago. Slavery exists underground, outside the law and outside the United Nations Convention of Human Rights.”

“By telling the story it is enlightening other people to what is going on; it is not a weight on my shoulders, theatre is the most powerful way to get the message across” Mende Nazer

‘Tracer Fire’, Architectural Association School of Architecture,

36 Bedford Square, London WC1B 3ES

Inspired by the phosphorescent trail of tracer bullets in the night sky, ‘Tracer Fire’ explores the juxtaposition between the beauty and violence of ballistic weapons - their mesmerizing, burning trail belying their destructiveness upon impact, and the highly-wrought nature of their machinery at odds with the havoc they wreak. Projected in a darkened room to a soundtrack composed by the artist, the ‘video’ work, which took a year to make, in fact uses motion graphics and is comprised of 30,000 images hand-drawn using a digital pen.

Born in Bangalore India, during the fading days of the Raj, Isla grew up on a tea plantation managed by her father. She spent her early years in the lush, verdant hills of Kerala
This warm, spice-scented idyll was abruptly ended when, obliged by tradition and entirely believing they were doing the best for their daughters, her parents sent Isla and her sister ‘home’ to boarding school, but ‘home’ was cold, gloomy, post-war austerity Scotland.
Isla is known for her long list of appearances both on stage and screen spanning over 40 years, having starred with the RSC & National Theatre.

 UPRISING

Directed By Jatinder Verma

Marking the 30th anniversary of the Brixton riots, award winning author Alex Wheatle MBE presents his moving autobiograpical story of how he became a writer.

Alex takes audiences on a journey through Britain in the 1980s: from the brutality of children's homes to life on the 'frontline' in riot-torn Brixton and sharing a prison cell with a fierce Rasta -man. A journey punctuated by the musclar singing of lyrics that made Alex the famous 'yard-man Irie' of the Brixton Club scene.

Inspired by his best-selling novel, Brixton Rock and East of Acre Lane Alex Wheatle’s performance is a gem. Alex’s latest novel Brenton Brown, the eagerly awaited follow up to Brixton Rock, was published in 2011.

“A triumph. Bears a striking resemblance to Graham Greene’s Brighton Rock’, (but) this is funny. Brixton Rock is a debut which confirms its author as a pro in prose"
                               The Times on Brixton Rock.
"This is a vibrant book pulsing with the reggae beats of the era. The dialogue has rhythm and inventiveness. And the violent climax is a cathartic one, the logical and positive first stage of a revolution."

This is the first time in its entire history that the London Design scene will host such a comprehensive showcase of unique multi-disciplinary black talent:
"By initiating a high quality selection of work drawn from across the black communities, AACDD presents a true talent showcase that shines a light on creative ability, where it is often not sought or acknowledged by the design industry. The shows on offer by AACDD provide a distinguished road map for an under represented part of the creative community. It could not be a more appropriate moment for the UK particularly London to embrace the opportunity of challenging perceptions and encouraging positive activity aimed at building social and economic stability".
